What is there to do in Key West?

Published by

One of the stops on a recent Virgin Voyages sailing was Key West, Florida. We didn’t know much about Key West except that Ernest Hemingway had a home there. Neither of us were particularly interested in that, so what were we going to do with our day in Key West?

Mile 0

We walked about a mile from the port to see the iconic Mile 0. We actually stumbled across it by accident but found it pretty cool that it’s the beginning (or end, depending on your perspective) of US Highway 1.

Roosters

If you like a nice cock, and we know you do, there are hundreds of them walking the streets of Key West at any given time. Plenty of cock-a-doodle-dos and wing flapping for the budding ornithologists out there!

Southernmost Point in the U.S.A.

At a certain point, one must reach the southernmost point in the United States. Turns out, that point is in Key West! It’s also 90 miles from Cuba and there is a large buoy-shaped statue that alerts you that you have reached the end of the United States. There was a crazy long line of people to get pictures at this monument, so we just snapped a picture from across the street.

Key Lime Pie

We met a couple of ladies who were on the search for the perfect key lime pie and decided to host their own key lime pie crawl instead of attending a bar crawl. Whoever those ladies are, we commend you!

Most places claim to have the original key lime pie, but we were skeptical that so many could have the original recipe. After talking to several people, both locals and tourists, the consensus seemed to be that the best key lime pie was located at Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe. Kermit, your key lime pie is amazing, and we salute you!

Naval Air Station

As we arrived at the port for Key West, I was in a Sunrise Yoga class onboard the Scarlet Lady. The first thing I noticed was a large golf ball at the edge of the water. Apparently, this was the Naval Air Station at Key West. You can’t really do anything here besides walk by it, but it was pretty interesting to look at and imagine what that large golf ball structure is used for.

Key West Pub Crawl

We purchased a Shore Thing from Virgin Voyages for our port day at Key West. It was the Key West Pub Crawl, and it was hosted by Key West Promotions. We had an excellent time walking around the island and grabbing drinks at multiple interesting bars!

  • Dustin and Kelly starting the pub crawl with some Hurricanes
  • Cup with Flying Monkeys Saloon
  • Angelina's pizzeria at Key West with a crazy pizza logo with big eyes bugging out of head.
  • Pickles Pub's Sandbar logo with a pickle lounging in a hammock
  • Garden of Eden Clothing Optional Bar in Key West

This was a great Shore Thing for us because we got to meet some great people who were on the Scarlet Lady with us. We got to try a lot of different drinks, and we had a lot of laughs along the way, including a conch blowing contest!
